Arts and Crafts Movement
Arts and Crafts Movement > Home
Today William Morris (24 March 1834 to 3 October 1896) is most often associated as a founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement but the Arts and Crafts Movement was also influenced by others such as Augustus Pugin and John Ruskin. He was associated with various techniques and movements as well as the Arts and Crafts Movement - amongst others he started off as an architect (working for a time with G.E.Street) and had strong links with Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood ('PRB').
Many other makers are associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement. For example Liberties of London have and do sell some Arts and Crafts Movement style items (they sell other styles of work too), as well as other companies selling items.
Relation to Mission and Craftsman Styles
In the US, various people took on the Arts and Crafts Style / Movement and used the names such as Mission and Craftsman to describe them. Because I am based in England I use the term Arts and Crafts but the terms Mission and Craftsman could be applied too. Gustav Stickley used the term Craftsman to describe his items.
Arts and Crafts Movement Examples in the UK
There are some examples of Arts and Crafts Movement properties and museums in the UK. Whilst this is not a complete list, and I have not had a chance to visit all this, so do not endorse them, these include:
- The Red House, designed by Philip Webb, William Morris first house, and where he started Morris & Co.
- William Morris Gallery (Walthamstow, London)
- Kelmscott Manor - house adjacent to the River Thames in Glos. which Morris used as his summer home.
- Kelmscott House - William Morris London Home
- Wightwick Manor and Gardens
- Arts and Crafts Style Guide from the V&A, London
