Augustus Pugin

Arts and Crafts Movement > Augustus Pugin

Augustus Pugin (1 March 1812 - 14 September 1852) was one of the first known & celebrated people to deplore industrialism which was separating art, labour, design and craftsmanship. Augustus Pugin was an architect in the Gothic style and liked the same style in furniture. Whilst Augustus Pugin said he wasn't anti technology, Augustus Pugin did want to limit the user of machines to their 'legitimate use' to relive repetitive tasks etc.

Augustus Pugin's views influenced the Arts & Crafts Movement.

Whilst I do not directly have an interest in the Gothic style, it is the interest in making things by hand that interests me. Like Pugin, I am not anti technology, and in fact use it to run parts of my work using the internet etc., but I do see a place for hand made items which are useful rather than putting everything through a machine.

If you wish to find out more about Augustus Pugin then perhaps do a Google search on Augustus Pugin.
