Gustav Stickley
Arts and Crafts Movement > Gustav Stickley
Gustav Stickley (March 9, 1858 - April 21, 1942) is one well known example of a US Arts and Crafts / Craftsman style furniture marker.
It is said that Gustav Stickley, who was already a minor furniture maker, was greatly influenced by a visit to England in 1897 and returned to the US with new goals. Gustav Stickley influences were varied - from English Furniture he had seen, to simple American cabinet makers in 17th & early 18th centuries, as well as the Shaker style.
I admire Gustav Stickley's work greatly - both in his style and execution. He is currently 'in-vouge' too.
He used the term 'Craftsman' to describe his work rather than 'Arts and Crafts' but he is regarded as an Arts and Crafts maker.
The Craftsman Magazine
The Craftsman Magazine was founded by Gustav Stickley to promote his ideals.
