Hand Made Clocks - traditional techniques
All items are made entirely by hand from rough sawn planks without the use of any power tools using age old traditional wood working techniques.
Inspired by the writings of Augustus Pugin, William Morris and John Ruskin etc. of a craftsperson taking pride in their personal handiwork, making items by hand, using traditional techniques and only natural materials.
In some cases I actually take a tree that has been felled naturally locally, transport it in my landrover (tree trunks are very heavy) and process the tree trunk entirely without powered machinery, using just hand saws etc. That is hard work but more rewarding. Sometimes this isn't possible, so I buy rough cut planks from a saw mill and process these entirely by hand.
Why no powered machines?
You will I'm sure understand that hand processing wood entirely by hand is quite a job and hard work - and I do it because I care about the items that I'm making. You know that it has been carefully made with a lot of thought put in to it - it isn't an item off a production line.
The whole Arts and Crafts Movement was about hand making items too - giving items an individuality from the skill of the maker (who has designed the item) and not the product of a production line / people who are just 'pressing buttons' but who are using their skills to make the items.
Summary of Making
If I'm starting from a raw tree trunk then I first need to cut & split the tree trunk up into useable pieces which can dry off. This is (perhaps remarkably) all done by hand using hand saws and the technique of splitting logs etc. And once that is done, to make in to useable planks using hand saws and hand planes using traditional techniques.
Unfortunately it isn't always possible to start from the tree trunk, but even buying the rough sawn planks requires a lot of effort to firstly smooth off the surface to get a suitable working surface and edges - this is all done using hand planes using traditional techniques.
Once I have the planks ready to use (and even to get here is quite a job) the planks are then marked out and, using traditional cabinet & clock making skills, to make the case.
