Arts and Crafts Movement > John Ruskin
John Ruskin (8 February 1819 - 20 January 1900) a renowed English Art Critic and social thinker / writer / poet / artist. John Ruskin had links to various groups such as the Pre-Raphaelite painters (which are linked to the arts and crafts movement) but who also influenced the Arts and Crafts Movement.
John Ruskin was a professor of art history at Oxford University and conducted a relentless campaign in return to the English vernacular mode. John Ruskin wanted to remove classical influences and return to hand made items.
John Ruskin, as well others such as those in the Pre-Raphaelite Movement and William Morris had strong ideas about the value of work, and that it was meant to be enjoyed, which was a basic principle of the Arts and Crafts Movement. A programme in Spring 2009 on BBC Radio 4 by John Cunningham on the 'Work Life Balance' covered some of this and was most interesting.
John Ruskin wrote many books, one of which was called 'The Stones of Venice' which is said to have greatly influenced Wm Morris.
