William Morris
Arts and Crafts Movement > William Morris
William Morris was a very talented person who had a number of interests and is one who people often associate with the Arts and Crafts Movement not least through his joint founding of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later to become Morris & Co.) who made a number of items - today his fabrics and papers are most recognised although we should not forget that they produced a wide range of items, including stained glass work, tapestries etc.
We should not forget that William Morris was also a talented writer / poet and socialist as well as an artist. The William Morris Society has more information.
Morris and Co
Now-a-days if you mention the Movement people often think of Morris and Co (although it started off as Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.) which was founded in 1861 after William Morris being unable to find furnishings for his houses, most notably, The Red House.
The emphasis was in craftspeople taking pride in their personal handiwork & using traditional techniques and materials to make various kinds of house hold etc. items rather than production lines. A number of other people and companies have evolved over the years who have made Arts and Crafts inspired house hold items.
Whilst William Morris lived in a number of properties, 2 properties that still exist and which are most linked to him are Red House and Kelmscott Manor.
If you wish to find out more about William Morris then perhaps do a Google search on William Morris as this site is predominately about arts and crafts clocks.
