Designs
William Morris felt that items should be designed and made by the same person as the maker will know more about how they are made, and this will influence the design.
I design all my own clock cases, all based on Arts and Crafts principles. Please note that I am based in England, which historical has a different bias than say the US arts and crafts movement.
William Morris in 'The beauty of life' Lecture in 1880 (and no doubt at other times) said:
Whilst 'useful' and 'beautiful' are subjective matters, I hope that my clocks are useful and beautiful.
Emphasis
The emphasis is to follow the arts and crafts traditions of simplicity and honesty of design and construction (and that is why designer and maker are the same), using grain of wood etc. to enhance the product. One ideal of the Arts and Crafts movement was to reduce the clutter / ornateness which was found in the Victorian items, particularly European items.
William Morris / Pugin / John Ruskin also wished to see use of local traditions and local materials which I use, where practically possible, and which influences the designs.
Methods
Designs are made using a combination of water colour sketches and dip pen and ink scale drawings on draft-mans tracing paper.
